Post-Harvest Processing
Key Activities:
- Sorting & Grading
- Separate harvested quills and leaves by quality:
- Quills: premium, standard, or industrial grade based on thickness, curl, and aroma.
- Leaves: whole vs. crushed, suitable for essential oil extraction or tea production.
- Assign processing batch IDs linked to the harvest batch.
- Drying
- Dry quills and leaves under controlled conditions:
- Sun-drying or hot-air drying at regulated temperature and humidity.
- Record drying method, duration, temperature, and batch ID.
- Monitor for mold or contamination.
- Cutting & Processing
- Cut quills to standard lengths for packaging.
- Grind quills if producing powdered cinnamon; store separately by batch.
- Record equipment used, operator, and batch ID.
- Quality Testing
- Conduct tests per batch:
- Moisture content
- Essential oil content
- Microbial contamination
- Aroma profile
- Document results in the digital traceability system linked to batch ID.
- Packaging
- Use batch-labeled bags, jars, or boxes for storage or retail.
- Include QR codes or barcodes linking to:
- Farm origin
- Harvest date
- Processing details
- Quality certification
Traceability Measures:
- Batch-Level Tracking
- Each processing batch is connected to the harvest batch → farm plot → mother tree.
- Digital Logging
- Record all post-harvest activities in a farm management or ERP system:
- Sorting/grading
- Drying method & parameters
- Cutting or grinding details
- Quality test results
- Packaging information
- Chain-of-Custody
- Ensure full traceability from harvest → processing → packaging.
- Maintain audit-ready records for certifications (organic, fair trade, or export compliance).
- Quality Verification
- QR codes allow customers or auditors to verify:
- Origin of cinnamon
- Processing method
- Batch-specific test results
Outcome
- Cinnamon is fully traceable and quality-verified before leaving the processing facility.
- Traceability ensures:
- Premium product integrity
- Export readiness
- Consumer trust through transparency
